What motivates us? We want the same things you do. Ask our founder, former NFL player Tommy Barnhardt: During the course of my 14-years in the NFL, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia.. I was working out in New Orleans, La., under the guidance of my trainer, Mackie Shilstone, when I blacked out. I was coding blue and was rushed immediately to the emergency room to be revived.
I didn't know what was happening to me at the time. Later in my hospital stay I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and was told I had to eat often while carefully watching what I ate so I could keep my blood-sugar levels elevated. Trying to manage my blood-sugar levels and not gain weight was the biggest battle of my career. Back then, I did not know how to handle it except to eat five or six small meals every two to three hours. Things became even more difficult when I moved to Tampa, Fla. in 1996 and suffered through workouts in the sweltering heat. To survive, I kept sugar-filled energy drinks and foods close by, which only caused my weight to yo-yo further. I lived in constant fear of being fined by the team every week if I missed my designated weight.
My struggle balancing my blood sugar while maintaining a constant, healthy weight continued through my retirement from the NFL. I was tired of the ups and downs in my weight, sugar and energy levels. I was tired of eating well-balanced meals only to feel that I was sacrificing my good decisions to enjoy a small taste of the sweet life. I was tired of sacrificing. I resolved to find a way to manage my insulin levels while having my dessert too. Not satisfied with what I found on store shelves, I created a dessert of my own that was balanced just like my meals, did not contain sugar and tasted great. By refining the process and the product, we have been able to design a dessert that is low in calories (160 calories per serving. Can you believe it?) without sacrificing taste. Now you can satisfy your sweet tooth while not raising your blood-sugar levels or having to worry about your waistline.
